Saavira Kambada Basadi (or Thousand Pillars Temple) is a temple in Moodbidri. It’s a 15th-century Jain temple, one of the finest in the region. Jain Tirthankara Chandranatha is the main deity of Moodbidri Jain Temple. Thus, it’s also called Chandranatha Basadi.

A distinctive feature of Thousand Pillar Jain Temple Mangalore is the magnificent pillars of the mandapams. It has also found a special place among the Chalukya rulers, the Rashtrakutas and the Hoysalas.

All the pillars in the temple have ornate carvings, and all of them are different. From mythical animals to natural inspirations, the carvings reflect the stories, art, and culture of ancient times.

Architecture of Saavira Kambada Basadi

Saavira Kambada Basadi is a three-storey temple adorned with carved sculptures. While the first storey is made of stone, the upper two are made of wood. And enshrined in the sanctum is a statue of Shri Chandranatha Swami. The figure is eight feet high and made of Pancha-Dhatu (five metals).

A thousand pillars support the temple. And those massive pillars are carved to resemble an octagonal wooden log. They’re engraved with exquisite details, and no two pillars are alike.

The dhvajastambha flag pole and the 50-foot manastambha pillar in front of the temple are also noteworthy.

History of Thousand Pillars Temple

Thousand Pillar Temple history dates back to 1430 when Devaraya Wodeyar, a local chieftain, started building this temple. The records say it took 31 years to complete. The 50-foot-tall manastambha pillar was erected later by Karkala Bhairava Queen Nagala Devi.

Various additions, such as the prayer hall, were made in the later stages of construction. The changes continued as recently as 1962, adding to the beauty of the temple.

Saavira Kambada Basadi Moodbidri is open from 9 AM to 8 PM. Entry is free for everyone, and you can visit it any day. It takes about 1-2 hours to explore the temple complex.

The best time to visit the temple is between November and February. It’s wintertime around Mangalore during those days. And the weather is the best during that time for exploring and discovering long-lost stories.
